Sevilla Rock Art Trail
San Rock Art in the Cederberg
About This Activity
The Sevilla Rock Art Trail offers a collection of ancient San rock paintings on Traveller’s Rest farm, approximately 30 kilometers from Enjo Nature Farm. This self-guided trail features ten distinct rock art sites along a 5km route through the Brandewyn Valley, and is considered one of the best introductions to authentic rock art in South Africa.
The trail starts at a gate near the Traveller’s Rest farmstall and restaurant and winds up the Brandewyn Valley for about two kilometers, showcasing some of the finest rock art in the district.
The trail is easy walking and well-marked, with numbered stops corresponding to the guide provided. After Site Nine, visitors can choose between returning to their cars or continuing down across the Brandewyn River, past the Sevilla cottages, to Site Ten. From there, it’s an easy return to the parking area via the Sevilla track.
The atmosphere at the sites is peaceful and immersive, and during spring (August-September), the trail is enhanced by wildflower displays across the landscape.
The paintings at Sevilla showcase San rock art dating back 1,500-8,000 years. The artwork primarily uses red-orange pigments derived from ochre, depicting:
- Human figures in various activities
- Animals, particularly eland
- Handprints
- Abstract patterns
